In recent years, the influence of Japanese City Pop has transcended its original era, making a resurgence in contemporary music scenes around the world. From mainstream pop to indie and electronic genres, artists are incorporating elements of City Pop into their sound, paying homage to the genre’s timeless grooves and nostalgic charm.

One of the most notable examples of City Pop’s contemporary resurgence is its influence on the global pop music landscape. Artists like Dua Lipa, The Weeknd, and Carly Rae Jepsen have all drawn inspiration from the smooth melodies and funky rhythms of City Pop, infusing their own music with a touch of retro flair. Tracks like Dua Lipa’s “Physical” and The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” pay homage to the genre’s disco-infused sound, while still putting a modern spin on things.

But City Pop’s influence extends beyond just mainstream pop — it’s also making waves in indie and electronic music circles. Bands like Toro y Moi and Neon Indian have embraced the genre’s vintage aesthetic, blending lo-fi production techniques with dreamy synths and nostalgic melodies. Meanwhile, electronic producers like Macross 82–99 and Yung Bae are sampling classic City Pop tracks and remixing them into infectious dancefloor anthems that appeal to a whole new generation of listeners.

In Japan, City Pop’s resurgence is also evident in the country’s thriving indie music scene, where bands like Suchmos and Vaundy are putting their own modern twist on the genre. With their smooth grooves and catchy hooks, these artists are carrying on the legacy of City Pop while adding their own unique flavor to the mix.

Whether it’s through mainstream pop hits, indie darlings, or electronic remixes, Japanese City Pop is experiencing a contemporary resurgence that shows no signs of slowing down. Its timeless grooves and nostalgic charm continue to captivate audiences around the world, proving that good music never goes out of style.

I blend City Pop elements with modern music influences, creating what I call Neo City Pop! Take a listen and let me know what you think! :)
